How to Choose the Right Indoor LED Display

Shopping for an indoor LED display can feel a bit like buying a new TV, except the stakes are way higher, the tech jargon is twice as confusing, and you can’t just return it to Best Buy if you mess up the measurements.

Whether you’re rigging up a corporate lobby, updating a church sanctuary, or trying to make your retail shopfront pop, picking the wrong screen is an expensive mistake.

Let’s cut through the marketing fluff and talk about what actually matters when buying an indoor LED screen.

1. Pixel Pitch: The "Make or Break" Factor

If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this: Pixel pitch is everything.

Pixel pitch (usually written as P1.2, P2.5, P4, etc.) is simply the distance in millimeters from the center of one LED cluster (or pixel) to the center of the next.

Smaller number = pixels are closer together = higher resolution.

Larger number = pixels are further apart = lower resolution (and lower price).

How do you choose? It all comes down to viewing distance—how far away your audience will be standing.

Here is a quick rule of thumb that industry insiders use:

The Golden Rule: If you buy a P4 screen but people are sitting 5 feet away from it, they’re going to see individual dots instead of a smooth picture. Don't pay for a P1.2 if your audience is 20 feet away either—that's just throwing money out the window.

2. Brightness: Don't Blind Your Audience

When dealing with outdoor screens, you need tons of brightness to fight the sun. Indoors? Not so much.

Indoor LED displays usually run anywhere between 600 to 1,200 nits (a measure of brightness).

If your screen is going into a typical conference room with controllable lighting, 600–800 nits is plenty.

If it’s going into a glass atrium or a retail space blasted by midday sun through big windows, you’ll want to look closer to 1,000–1,200 nits.

Pro tip: Ask your supplier if the screen has automatic dimming. You want something that looks crisp during a rainy morning but won't blind people when the room gets dark.

3. Maintenance Access: Front vs. Rear

LED screens aren't just one giant piece of glass; they are made of smaller cabinets tiled together. Eventually, an LED diode might die or a receiving card might act up. When that happens, how do you fix it?

You have two options here, and your choice depends entirely on how you're mounting the screen:

Front Serviceable: The LED modules can be popped out from the front using a vacuum tool or a magnetic tool. This is a must-have if you are mounting the screen flush against a wall.

Rear Serviceable: You need to get behind the screen to fix things. This works great if the screen is hanging from the ceiling or built onto a stage truss where there's plenty of walking room behind it.

Always check this before signing the contract. If you mount a rear-service screen flat on a drywall, you will literally have to tear down the wall just to fix a loose cable.

4. Refresh Rate: Why It Matters for Cameras

If you are using this screen for a church that livestreams, a TV studio, or a conference venue where people will be taking photos with their phones, look at the Refresh Rate.

Cheap screens have low refresh rates (around 1,920Hz). To the naked eye, they look fine. But look at them through a camera lens, and you’ll see ugly black lines rolling down the screen.

For anything involving cameras, video calls, or broadcasting, you want a refresh rate of 3,840Hz or higher. It keeps the image rock-solid on camera.

5. Trusting the Right Partner (The Real Cost)

Let's be honest: you can find incredibly cheap LED panels online. But with LEDs, you get exactly what you pay for.

Cheap components mean poor color uniformity (where one side of your screen looks slightly yellower than the other after six months) and high failure rates.

When vetting a manufacturer or supplier, don’t just look at the quote. Ask them:

  1. What brand of IC driver and LEDs do they use?
  2. Do they provide spare parts (modules, cables, power supplies) with the order? (Spoiler: you will need them later).
  3. What does their warranty process actually look like if a module dies?

Don't over-engineer your setup, but don't cut corners where it matters. Find your viewing distance first to lock in your pixel pitch, look at your room's lighting to choose the brightness, and make sure you have a plan for how to service the screen down the road.
